How to buy Ghana shares from the USA

Can someone in the USA buy shares in Ghana?

There is no separate United States product on this site. Listed shares in Ghana change hands through a stockbroker licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Ghana and by the Ghana Stock Exchange. Whether that firm will open an account for someone who lives in the United States is the firm's decision under the current rules. Yanci has not confirmed that decision country by country.

Joining the Yanci waitlist does not open an account. When investing launches, orders will go through Teak Tree Brokerage. Check that firm on the live lists before you send money. This page does not rank brokers.

The same caution, for other countries, is on Invest from abroad. The United Kingdom version is How to buy Ghana shares from the UK.

What are the general steps?

The Ghana Stock Exchange describes the in-Ghana route in How to buy and sell shares and its FAQ. For someone abroad, the shape of the process is:

  1. Open a Ghana investment account, meaning a securities account, with a Licensed Dealing Member. Also check the Securities and Exchange Commission broker-dealer list.
  2. Verify your identity. The documents a firm accepts can differ for someone who lives outside Ghana. Ask the broker what they accept today. This page does not invent a list.
  3. Fund the account. Moving money from the United States into Ghana depends on the bank or broker you use and on the rules where you live. This page does not name a transfer service.
  4. Convert currency into Ghana cedis. The broker or bank sets that rate. It is not a rate quoted here. Share prices, which move, are on today's market.
  5. Buy securities listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange. The broker places the order. You do not place it on the exchange yourself. The detail is in How to buy shares on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
  6. Receive dividends if the company declares them. A dividend can be small or skipped. What is a dividend? explains the word. Proceeds are not a promise, and this page does not say how a US bank will receive cedis.

What should you read before a ticker means anything?

Company pages show filing figures with each period. Compare places some peers side by side. Neither page says what to buy. How to invest in the Ghana Stock Exchange is the route onto the market.

This page does not cover United States tax. Ask a qualified tax adviser if you need that.

Frequently asked questions

How do you buy Ghana shares from the USA?

Through a licensed Ghanaian stockbroker, if that firm will accept a resident of the United States. Yanci has not confirmed eligibility by country. The waitlist does not open the account.

Does Yanci recommend a broker or a share?

No. Check the Ghana Stock Exchange and Securities and Exchange Commission lists yourself. This page does not rank firms and does not name a share to buy.

Can the same steps be used from the UK, Canada or Europe?

The general steps are the same. Eligibility still depends on the country and is still being confirmed. Start with Invest from abroad.
