What is a dividend?

What is a dividend?

A dividend is a payment a company decides to make to people who own its shares. The money comes from profit, if the company has profit it is willing to pay out. The company can also keep the profit and use it in the business. Shareholders do not send an invoice for a dividend. The board decides.

A dividend is not interest. Interest is the cost of borrowing, or the payment a lender receives. A share is a piece of a company, which What is a stock? explains. A treasury bill is a loan to the government, which What is a T-bill in Ghana? explains. Those are different words.

Does every company pay one?

No. Some listed companies pay a dividend in a given year. Some do not. A company that paid one last year can skip the next one. This page does not list who paid, and it does not quote an amount. Check the company's own announcement and its Ghana Stock Exchange filing, and read the date.

A dividend is also not a reason, by itself, to buy a share. The price you pay, the business, and whether the dividend continues are separate questions. Kofi does not answer the buy-or-sell question.

Where does a dividend show up?

If you hold the share through a broker, the broker is the usual route for the cash. Ask the broker how they pay it and what they charge. The company pages on this site show profit after tax from filings. Profit is not the same number as a dividend. A company can report a profit and pay no dividend.

Where do these facts come from?

Read the filings, not a tip: MTN Ghana (MTNGH) and GCB Bank (GCB). Today on the GSE is the price list. None of these links says a dividend was paid.

Figures and rules linked from the Ghana Stock Exchange or the SEC were the pages used when this lesson was last updated on 20 October 2026. Open those pages for the current wording.
