How to buy shares in Ghana

Short lesson. For the full walk-through with official lists and sources, read How to buy shares on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

How do you buy shares in Ghana?

Listed shares change hands on the Ghana Stock Exchange through a Licensed Dealing Member, also called a stockbroker. The broker is licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Ghana and by the exchange. You choose the firm, you open the account, and you tell the broker what to buy. Yanci does not place the order.

What happens after you choose a broker?

  1. Look the firm up on the Ghana Stock Exchange list of Licensed Dealing Members and on the SEC list of broker-dealers.
  2. Ask that firm to open a securities account. They will tell you which identity documents they need today.
  3. Tell the broker which listed share you want, and how many. The broker places the order. You do not place it on the exchange yourself.
  4. Read the contract note the broker sends. It should show the securities, the price, the fees and the number of shares.
  5. The shares are credited to your depository account. You can ask the Central Securities Depository for a statement.

Prices move. You can get back less than you paid. Fees are the broker's, so ask before you send money.

Where do these facts come from?

Company pages to read before a ticker is only a symbol: MTN Ghana (MTNGH) and GCB Bank (GCB). Prices are on today on the GSE. These are examples, not suggestions.
